In October 2014, the DC Department of Employment Services released a labor market analysis report stating there are approximately 490 dental hygienist currently employed in the state.

The report showed that between 2012 and 2022 the dental hygienist workforce would likely grow by 32.4%. As of 2014, at least 50% of all dental hygienists employed in Washington, DC:

• Have earned an associate’s degree
• Have at least two years of field experience
• Have completed classroom training
